Danh Pham, MD

Medical Oncologist

Danh Pham, MD, is a medical oncologist specializing in head and neck cancers. He joined the Division of Surgical Oncology at the WVU Cancer Institute in July 2020. He is an assistant professor and member of the hematology/oncology division in the Department of Medicine at West Virginia University.

Prior to joining the surgical oncology team at the WVU Cancer Institute, he completed a hematology/oncology fellowship at the University of Louisville James Graham Brown Cancer Center. He graduated with a medical degree from West Virginia University in 2013, where he also completed his internal medicine residency in 2016. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in 2006.

Along with head and neck cancers, Dr. Pham specializes in cutaneous (skin) cancers and benign hematology. He has a particular interest in helping the people of West Virginia and the surrounding region. “I’m passionate about educating others and delivering the much needed attention to head and neck cancer in West Virginia,” says Dr. Pham, “because this population suffers significantly from a disease that is particularly challenging within medically underserved, rural areas of the a state with high rates of tobacco use.”

Part of why Dr. Pham believes in the WVU Cancer Institute’s mission is the integrated multidisciplinary team of experts – including oncologic ear, nose, and throat surgeons; radiation oncologists; and medical oncologists – with whom he works.

Patients should also be aware of the value that access to clinical trials can provide, according to Dr. Pham. “We have a number of clinical trials ranging from small phase 1-2 trials to large, national phase 3 trials currently enrolling patients,” he explains. “There are also head and neck cancer survivorship initiatives, such as the Nurse AMIE project, which is helping patients recognize and manage their symptoms at home.”

Outside of work, Dr. Pham enjoys his time at home with his family and children. He loves the outdoors and travel and hopes to see many other parts of our country and the rest of the world.
