CEO Spends ‘Day in the Life’ with Food and Nutrition Team at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center

Mark O'Hern gets inside look at room service program, employee dedication

Mark O'Hern, Regional President of WVU Hospitals East and President and CEO of WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, recently spent a day in the life with the WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Food and Nutrition Department. During the experience, he connected with a longtime dietary assistant and learned how new initiatives are impacting patient experiences.

O’Hern is continuing his ongoing series of Day in the Life visits to WVU Medicine departments across the Eastern Panhandle region to gain and sharpen understanding of the realities different team members face every day – like Dietary Assistant Jermaine Streeter.

“Jermaine is an outstanding team member. He is knowledgeable, dependable, and deeply committed to his work. During my time with him, I assisted with delivering meal trays across multiple units, where it was clear that Jermaine has built strong relationships throughout the hospital,” O’Hern said. “He knows staff across departments and, more importantly, takes time to connect with patients in a meaningful way, consistently working to brighten their day.”

After over a decade on the team, Streeter still starts his day early to ensure operations are running smoothly and demonstrates a proactive mindset that reflects his pride in the department’s performance.

“His dedication to excellence is evident in both his preparation and his interactions,” O’Hern explained.

In addition to working face-to-face with the team, O’Hern also had the opportunity to see the recently implemented room service program in action and learn more about its positive impacts.

“The ability for patients to order meals on demand, choose from an expanded menu, and determine their delivery time clearly enhances the patient experience and satisfaction,” he said, thanking department leadership for their hard work. “The successful rollout of the room service program, along with their adaptability amid ongoing facility changes related to the new bed tower, reflects a high level of commitment and teamwork. Their efforts are making a meaningful difference in both patient care and operational excellence.”
