Mother’s work at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center inspires daughter to join MedEd Program
MARTINSBURG — A mother's inspiration recently came to life as a WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center patient care technician watched her daughter take the first step to pursue a career in community healthcare.
At WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center, that inspiration is coming to life through the MedEd program, which recently welcomed a new group of high school students for hands-on learning and early exposure to healthcare careers.
Among the students is Emma Wilber, who has a very personal connection to the work she’s exploring. Emma’s mother, Ashley Creamer, is a patient care technician on the Oncology Unit at Berkeley Medical Center. Through her mom’s work, Emma has seen firsthand the compassion, dedication, and impact health care professionals have on patients and families every day.
Ashley says she’s beyond proud of her daughter, who hopes to pursue a career in pediatrics.
"I'm proud of Emma, and proud of myself for raising such a driven, kind young lady," she said.
For Emma, her mom has been the ultimate role model.
“She has been my source of everything my whole life,” Emma says. “I really look up to what she does, and I also love seeing people happy. I want to be able to do that and put a smile on somebody’s face when I tell them that they’re going to be okay.”
This Mother’s Day, stories like Ashley and Emma’s remind us how powerful mentorship — and a mother’s example — can be in shaping the future of medicine
