WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center Nationally Recognized for Commitment to Excellence in Stroke Care 

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center has earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, recognizing the hospital’s commitment to providing timely, evidence-based stroke care that aligns with nationally recognized treatment guidelines. 

The American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® program helps hospitals improve patient outcomes by ensuring stroke care is based on the latest scientific research and clinical best practices.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our physicians, nurses, therapists and support staff who work together every day to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients.” 

As part of its ongoing investment in stroke care, Berkeley Medical Center opened a state-of-the-art neurointerventional radiology suite last year to provide advanced diagnostic and treatment capabilities for conditions affecting the brain, spine and blood vessels. The suite enables physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures, including mechanical thrombectomy, which can quickly remove blood clots and restore blood flow to the brain. 

The addition of these services allows many patients in the Eastern Panhandle to receive advanced, time-sensitive stroke interventions locally rather than traveling outside the region for care. 

In addition to the Gold Plus award, Berkeley Medical Center earned the American Heart Association’s Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll designation for reducing treatment times for eligible stroke patients and improving outcomes. The hospital also received the Target: Type 2 Diabetes™ Honor Roll award for providing evidence-based care to stroke patients with Type 2 diabetes.
