WV Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program - WVU Cancer Institute

WV Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program

WVU Cancer Institute staff works with primary care clinics, employers, and partners to increase breast and cervical cancer screenings in the community as part of the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program. Staff also help eligible West Virginians access free or low-cost screening and diagnostic services through community outreach and education.

Free or low-cost services, including clinical breast exams, Pap tests, pelvic exams, and mammograms, are available for West Virginia residents who meet the following criteria:

  • Women between the ages of 21 and 64
  • Transgender or gender-diverse individuals who have taken/currently take hormones or who have not undergone a bilateral mastectomy
  • No health insurance or are underinsured
  • Income that is at or below 250 percent of the current federal poverty level

Breast and cervical cancer screening guidelines may vary based on individual and family risk factors. Most people begin breast cancer screening at age 40 and complete it every year or every other year. Screening for cervical cancer is usually needed every three years. Talk with your primary care provider about the breast and cervical cancer screening recommendations that work best for you.
